**Los Angeles, CA** – A protest on the UCLA campus today, part of a larger “500 Days of Escalated Genocide” campaign, resulted in one arrest and several tense standoffs between protesters and UC Police Department (UCPD) officers.
The demonstration, focused on accusations that the University of California system has invested $32 billion in companies allegedly complicit in genocide, began with a march towards campus. Protesters blocked crosswalks at major intersections, prompting a significant UCPD response, including officers in riot gear equipped with batons and zip ties. Around 4:30 p.m., one protester was detained outside the Luskin Conference Center.
Earlier, a banner accusing the UC of the aforementioned investment was hung on the Arthur Ashe Student Health and Wellness Center. Two individuals subsequently removed the banner. While Bruin Plaza is designated as a free speech zone, UCLA policy requires prior permission for such demonstrations, which was reportedly not obtained. The protest concluded around 4:10 p.m. with protesters dispersing from Bruin Plaza. The incident is under investigation.
