Wed Feb 19 14:09:28 UTC 2025: ## Kumbh Mela Bathing Sites Contaminated: CPCB Report

**Prayagraj, India** – Millions of pilgrims attending the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj are at risk due to dangerously high levels of fecal coliform bacteria in the bathing waters, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) revealed on Monday. The CPCB reported to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that multiple monitoring sites along the river failed to meet basic bathing water standards.

Fecal coliform, an indicator of sewage contamination, exceeded the permissible limit of 2,500 units per 100 ml at several locations. The presence of this bacteria signals potential contamination with harmful pathogens that can cause illnesses ranging from fever and nausea to typhoid, hepatitis, and dysentery. While coliform bacteria themselves aren’t inherently harmful, their presence indicates the likely presence of more dangerous microorganisms.

The CPCB attributed the high levels of fecal contamination to the massive influx of pilgrims bathing at the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of three sacred rivers. The report highlights the need for improved sanitation and water treatment measures during such large-scale religious gatherings. Authorities have not yet commented on the report or outlined plans to address the contamination. Pilgrims are advised to take precautions, such as thoroughly washing after bathing and considering boiling or chlorinating the water before consumption.
