Tue Feb 18 09:22:44 UTC 2025: ## Modi’s Unprecedented Airport Welcome for Qatari Emir Signals Strengthening Ties
**New Delhi, February 18** – Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke protocol on Monday by personally greeting the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, upon his arrival in New Delhi for a two-day state visit. The warm welcome, which included a cultural performance and the presence of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, underscores the growing importance of India-Qatar relations.
The Emir’s visit, at the invitation of the Indian government, focuses on strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, energy, and technology. Bilateral talks between PM Modi and the Emir are scheduled for Tuesday, following a ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhavan and a meeting with President Droupadi Murmu. Several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) are expected to be signed.
Currently, bilateral trade between the two nations stands at approximately $20 billion, with Qatar being India’s largest supplier of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). Both countries aim to expand this trade to include renewable energy, fintech, and technology.
Beyond economic ties, India and Qatar share strong defense cooperation, including training programs and regular naval visits. The large Indian diaspora in Qatar – estimated at 8.4 lakh – also contributes significantly to the bilateral relationship.
However, one outstanding issue remains: the return of a former Indian naval personnel. While seven others were released following intervention from Delhi, this issue highlights the complexities of the relationship.
Experts believe Qatar’s mediating role in West Asia, including its interactions with the Taliban, adds further significance to the visit. Qatar could potentially act as a channel of communication between India and the Taliban, according to Harsh V Pant, professor of International Relations at King’s College London. The Emir’s visit signals a deepening of ties between the two nations, reflecting India’s broader engagement with the West Asian region.
