**Paris, February 18, 2025** – British Prime Minister Keir Starmer declared today that a firm US security commitment is the only viable path to lasting peace in Ukraine. Speaking after an emergency meeting of European leaders in Paris, Starmer emphasized the need for increased European defence spending and a greater commitment to continental security.
While acknowledging that discussions are still preliminary, Starmer stated his willingness to deploy British peacekeeping troops to Ukraine as part of a lasting peace agreement. However, he stressed that this contingent would only be deployed if the US provides a crucial security guarantee to deter future Russian aggression.
Starmer, who was the first European leader to publicly suggest sending peacekeeping troops, expects further talks with European leaders following a trip to Washington next week to meet with US President Donald Trump. The discussions will focus on strategies for resolving the nearly three-year-long conflict in Ukraine.
