**Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India** – The death of a Nepali student at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University has sparked outrage and a demand for justice. Prakriti Lamsal, a third-year student, was found dead in her hostel room, prompting her father, Sunil Lamsal, to allege harassment and emotional blackmail as contributing factors to her suicide.
Lamsal stated that while an investigation is underway and one person has been arrested, he believes this individual is responsible for his daughter’s death. He further revealed that Prakriti’s phone, laptop, and diary have been submitted for forensic analysis. While acknowledging police cooperation, he expressed concern over reports that students were being asked to leave the campus and insisted on justice for his daughter.
In response to the incident, KIIT University has established a 24/7 control room and helpline to assist Nepali students returning to campus. The university also announced that over 700 Nepali students will be allowed to return to their hostels.
Nepal’s Foreign Minister, Arzu Rana Deuba, has taken up the matter diplomatically, engaging in conversations with the Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, and instructing the Nepali Ambassador to India to investigate the situation and ensure the safety of Nepali students at KIIT. The Nepali Embassy in New Delhi has also issued a communique regarding the incident. The Ministry of External Affairs in Nepal is actively monitoring the situation and providing updates. The investigation into Prakriti Lamsal’s death is ongoing.
