Mon Feb 17 21:05:36 UTC 2025: ## Indian Scientists Develop AI-Powered Hilsa Fish Forecast
**Hyderabad, India – February 18, 2025** – The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has launched a new AI-powered advisory system to help fishermen predict Hilsa fish catches off the West Bengal coast. The Hilsa Fishery Advisory (HiFA) utilizes machine learning algorithms to analyze environmental data, including chlorophyll levels, salinity, rainfall, and ocean currents, to generate a three-day forecast categorizing Hilsa availability into five levels: very low, low, medium, high, and very high.
This species-specific forecast, the second of its kind after a similar system for Tuna, aims to assist fishermen in maximizing their catches of the high-demand, high-value Hilsa. The advisory, developed in collaboration with Vidyasagar and Jadhvapur universities, is disseminated via messages and email, in cooperation with local authorities, and covers an area up to 50 kilometers from the coast. A similar advisory for mackerel is planned for the future.
In related news, INCOIS also unveiled its first Global Ocean Reanalysis (IGORA) product, spanning 45 years of data (1979-2023). This initiative, utilizing an upgraded Global Ocean Data Assimilation system in collaboration with the US National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), aims to improve the accuracy of long-term ocean climate trend analysis, enhance weather and climate forecasting, and better understand ocean currents. IGORA’s improved performance over existing models is expected to lead to more accurate monsoon predictions. INCOIS stated that a second version of IGORA is currently under development.
