**NEW DELHI, INDIA – February 19, 2025** – A Railway Protection Force (RPF) officer, Constable Reena, is being hailed as a symbol of “Nari Shakti” (women’s power) after a video surfaced showing her patrolling New Delhi Railway Station with her one-year-old son strapped to her chest, just days after a deadly stampede.
The video, shared by RPF India on social media, shows Constable Reena, a baton in hand, navigating the crowded platform, guiding passengers, and maintaining order. The post praised her dedication, highlighting the challenges faced by working mothers balancing professional duties with motherhood.
Constable Reena, who has served since 2014, reportedly returned to duty despite being on leave following the February 16th stampede, which claimed 18 lives and injured at least 15. Her husband, a CRPF constable, is stationed in Jammu and Kashmir, leaving her with no childcare support. She told the Times of India that bringing her son to work is “a normal routine.” She carries his supplies – including porridge, milk, a blanket, and diapers – while working her 4 pm to midnight shift, which often takes her to various stations including Anand Vihar and Nizamuddin.
The incident sparked a public conversation about childcare facilities for railway employees, with some social media users calling on the Railway Ministry to provide better support. Others questioned the RPF’s policy allowing her to work with her child.
In response to the stampede, Indian Railways announced a significant overhaul of crowd-control measures. This includes deploying additional personnel, installing over 200 new CCTV cameras at Delhi stations, implementing colour-coded enclosures and real-time crowd monitoring at 60 high-traffic stations, and suspending platform ticket sales for seven hours during peak periods.
