**Bengaluru, February 17, 2025** – Karnataka’s online land registration portal, Kaveri 2.0, suffered a significant Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack in December 2024 and January 2025, causing widespread disruption to property registration services across the state. The attack, perpetrated by unidentified individuals, involved a surge of malicious traffic that overwhelmed the system, leading to near-total service outages.

According to the Revenue and E-Governance Departments, the attack was not a technical glitch, but a deliberate attempt to cripple the portal. The Inspector General of Registrations and Commissioner of Stamps filed a complaint with the cybercrime police, resulting in a case under the Information Technology Act, 2000.

The attack leveraged a botnet – a network of compromised computers – to generate massive amounts of traffic. In one instance, the portal received 6.2 lakh requests in just two hours, eight times the normal volume. Investigators identified 62 email accounts from 14 IP addresses involved in the attack. Fake accounts were also created to flood the database.

The DDoS attack highlights the vulnerability of even critical government services to sophisticated cyberattacks. While the portal was eventually restored, the incident resulted in a significant drop in property registrations and caused considerable inconvenience to citizens.

Experts emphasize the need for robust cybersecurity measures, including advanced traffic filtering, rate limiting, bot detection, strong authentication, and regular security audits. Collaboration with cybersecurity agencies and the development of incident response plans are also crucial. Users are advised to be vigilant against phishing and other social engineering attacks.

This attack is not an isolated incident. Similar attacks have targeted high-profile platforms like Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) and GitHub in previous years, underscoring the pervasive nature of this threat. The Kaveri 2.0 attack serves as a stark reminder for organizations, particularly government agencies, to prioritize cybersecurity and invest in robust mitigation strategies to protect critical online services.
