**Theni, Tamil Nadu –** Theni police have launched a short documentary film, “Sinthithu Seyalaatru” (Think Before You Act), to raise awareness about a growing digital arrest scam targeting residents. The film comes in response to 30 complaints filed, totaling ₹3 crore in losses.
According to Superintendent of Police R. Shiva Prasad, the scam involves callers, primarily from northern Indian states and some from the Philippines and Cambodia, who falsely impersonate customs or other officials and digitally “arrest” victims. Senior citizens are reportedly the most frequent targets.
While the government has issued mobile alerts, many remain vulnerable. SP Shivaprasad urged the public to report suspicious calls immediately, assuring swift police action. The documentary aims to educate citizens on recognizing and avoiding this type of scam. Investigations into the scam are ongoing.
