**NEW DELHI** – At least 18 people died and several others were injured in a stampede at New Delhi Railway Station Saturday night. The incident occurred around 10 pm on platform 16, when a surge of passengers, reportedly confused by conflicting train announcements, rushed a narrow stairway, creating a deadly bottleneck.
Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar stated Sunday that the Railway Ministry is investigating whether misinformation or “fake news” contributed to the tragedy. “The Rail Ministry is investigating this incident to understand if any conspiracy or fake news was propagated that caused such an incident,” Majumdar said.
In response to the incident, enhanced security measures have been implemented at the station. Delhi Police, along with the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP), have deployed additional personnel to manage the crowds. Barricades have been erected, patrolling intensified, and quick reaction teams deployed. CCTV surveillance has also been boosted to aid in crowd control.
Despite these measures, the station remained heavily congested on Sunday, with thousands of passengers struggling to board trains. Announcements are being made to guide commuters and prevent further panic. The incident has prompted questions about the adequacy of crowd management and communication systems at the station.
