Sun Feb 16 17:10:00 UTC 2025: ## KCR: From Student Activist to Telangana’s Architect
**Hyderabad, February 17, 2024** – On the occasion of K. Chandrashekar Rao’s (KCR) birthday, we revisit the remarkable journey of the man who spearheaded the formation of Telangana state. Born on February 17, 1954, in Chinthamdakka village, Siddipet district (formerly Medak), KCR’s life has been a tapestry woven with ambition, setbacks, and unwavering determination.
His family, originally from Nirmal, Siddipet district, relocated to Chinthamdakka after losing land due to a reservoir construction. KCR’s early education was in Dubbaka, followed by high school in Siddipet. Even during his student years at Osmania University, where he pursued a BA in History, Political Science, and Telugu Literature, his leadership qualities and political aspirations were evident. He joined Sanjay Gandhi’s Youth Congress during his intermediate studies and served as a student leader. His first foray into student politics resulted in defeat, yet this didn’t deter him.
His association with A. Madan Mohan ignited his passion for Telangana. After graduating, KCR became Madan Mohan’s protégé and actively campaigned for him in the 1978 by-elections. KCR’s oratory skills quickly gained him popularity. After Sanjay Gandhi’s death in 1980, he joined N.T. Rama Rao’s Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 1983, initially facing defeat against his mentor. He later won the Siddipet Assembly seat in 1985 and served in various ministerial positions.
His political career took a significant turn in 1999. While serving as Deputy Speaker in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly under Chandrababu Naidu, he resigned from the TDP, citing his commitment to achieving a separate Telangana state. He formed the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) in 2001.
His journey to achieve statehood involved a dramatic fast-unto-death, leading to his arrest. However, the growing momentum of the Telangana movement, including student protests and a successful general strike, finally convinced the central government to initiate the state formation process. Telangana was officially formed on June 2, 2014, with KCR becoming its first Chief Minister.
KCR’s TRS secured a landslide victory in the 2014 and 2018 state assembly elections, implementing several welfare schemes like Mission Bhagiratha, Rythu Bandhu, and Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project. However, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), the renamed TRS, suffered a significant setback in the December 2023 Assembly elections, winning only 39 seats and losing to the Congress’s 64 seats. Despite this recent defeat, KCR’s impact on Telangana’s history remains undeniable.
