**NEW DELHI** – A magnitude 4 earthquake struck Delhi and the surrounding National Capital Region (NCR) at 5:36 am on Monday, causing strong tremors that jolted residents awake. The shallow quake, with a depth of just 5 km, had its epicenter near Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in Dhaula Kuan, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The NCS website pinpoints the epicenter approximately 4 km southwest of New Delhi.
While the magnitude was relatively low, many residents reported feeling strong and violent shaking, leading some in Noida and Ghaziabad to evacuate their buildings. CCTV footage captured buildings shaking for several seconds.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to assure citizens, urging calm and preparedness for potential aftershocks. He stated that authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
An NCS official noted that the region experiences smaller, low-magnitude earthquakes every two to three years, citing a 3.3 magnitude quake in 2015.
