Mon Feb 17 01:18:07 UTC 2025: ## Three Forest Fires in Two Weeks Spark Concerns Over Preparedness at Taljai Hill

**Pune, India –** A series of three forest fires at Taljai Hill over a two-week period has ignited concerns about forest security and the preparedness of the Pune Forest Department. The fires, occurring on February 6th, 9th, and 14th, scorched nearly one hectare of forest land and damaged local vegetation and biodiversity.

Lokesh Bapat of the ‘Tell Us’ organization witnessed one of the fires and reported delays in response despite alerting officials. He highlighted a lack of readily available firefighting equipment, including a fire extinguisher previously donated to the department. He also noted the shortage of forest department staff and the absence of nearby water sources.

Manoj Barbole, range forest officer, explained a common tactic used by arsonists: igniting incense sticks and nearby grass and leaving the scene before the fire takes hold. The dry grass, he said, allows fires to spread rapidly.

The incidents at Taljai Hill are not isolated. A major fire near Katraj on February 15th required hours to extinguish, and the Sinhagad fort area has experienced four fires in the past month. Members of the Sinhagad fort joint forest management committee (JFMC) have voiced concerns about insufficient manpower and firefighting equipment. While the forest department claims to have purchased sufficient extinguishers and hired additional staff, the JFMC’s request for equipment is reportedly pending due to a review process.

Forest officials have registered cases against unknown persons in relation to the Taljai Hill fires and are investigating the Katraj incident, which is suspected to be arson due to its proximity to a main road. The extent of the damage from the Katraj fire is still being assessed. The repeated incidents underscore the need for improved forest fire prevention strategies and emergency response capabilities in the Pune area.
