**COIMBATORE, February 15, 2025** – Following a recent government order authorizing the regulated culling of wild boars, the Coimbatore Forest Department is taking steps to address the growing problem of wild boar colonization in residential areas. The department is actively mapping locations outside forest boundaries where wild boar populations have established themselves or frequently roam.
According to D. Venkatesh, Conservator of Forests and Field Director of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, the District Forest Officer has been tasked with identifying these “hotspots.” Department staff are undergoing training for the regulated culling initiative, and senior officials are attending weekly farmer grievance meetings to gather information on crop damage caused by wild boars.
Field staff have reported a significant wild boar presence in areas including Maruthamalai foothills, Vadavalli, Kanuvai, Pannimadai, Thondamuthur, and Siruvani Road. These animals are not only damaging crops but also causing road accidents due to their unpredictable movements. Improper waste management is cited as a contributing factor, attracting the omnivorous animals to residential and semi-urban areas.
A recent inspection near Vedapatti revealed a sounder of wild boars, including adults and piglets, living adjacent to a residential property. As this location is within two kilometers of the forest boundary, the Coimbatore Forest Range Officer, V. Thirumurugan, stated that the animals must be captured or driven back into the forest, as per the government order. The department is working to address this growing issue and mitigate the conflict between human populations and the expanding wild boar population.
