**Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir –** Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Saturday defended the proposed amendments to the Waqf Bill, asserting they aim to improve the management of Waqf properties for the benefit of poor Muslims, and not to seize them. During a visit to Srinagar, Rijiju stated that the amendments are designed to ensure that the significant Waqf assets across India are used effectively to aid the Muslim community. He cited support for the bill from Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and several Muslim MPs.
The minister’s visit included a review of development works at the Dargah Hazratbal shrine and a meeting with local stakeholders to discuss the Union Budget 2025. Rijiju praised the J&K Waqf Board’s development initiatives at the shrine, suggesting they could serve as a model for other religious sites.
The Budget 2025 discussions involved representatives from various sectors, including tourism, handicrafts, and agriculture. Key concerns raised included the implementation of the Minimum Wages Act, the revival of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), and the rehabilitation of houseboat owners. Rijiju emphasized the government’s commitment to sustainable tourism and environmental conservation in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly focusing on wetland preservation and supporting local livelihoods. The Srinagar meeting was part of a nationwide initiative to gather feedback on the Union Budget.
