**NEW DELHI** – A stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night left 25 people injured, including 10 seriously, police confirmed. The incident occurred around 10 PM amidst a large influx of devotees heading to the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj.
The crush happened on platforms 13 and 14, which were overcrowded with passengers boarding trains to Prayagraj. Railway DCP KPS Malhotra confirmed the incident, stating that minor stampedes occurred near platform 14 and an escalator near platform 1. Reports indicate that 11 women, two men, and two children were among the injured.
Following the incident, police swiftly responded, providing assistance and transporting the injured to hospitals. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident. Delhi LG V.K. Saxena and Union Minister Rajnath Singh expressed their condolences and offered their sympathies to the affected families.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal criticized the central and Uttar Pradesh governments, alleging negligence in ensuring public safety. He stated on X (formerly Twitter) that the lack of preparedness in Prayagraj for the influx of devotees was unacceptable and called for immediate assistance to the affected. He highlighted the lack of arrangements for devotees arriving from various states.
