**Mumbai, India** – India’s resounding 3-0 ODI series victory over England has boosted confidence ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy, with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli rediscovering form. However, concerns remain, particularly regarding the team’s inconsistent middle order. A significant rift within the team management has emerged, casting doubt on selection decisions.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar are reportedly at odds over the roles of Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant. Agarkar previously named Pant the team’s number one wicketkeeper, yet he didn’t feature in the England series. Gambhir subsequently declared KL Rahul as the preferred wicketkeeper, creating a confusing and contradictory message.
Further complicating matters is the uncertainty surrounding Iyer’s position. Initially benched in favour of Yashasvi Jaiswal, an injury to Kohli forced Iyer into the number three spot, where he impressed. However, the management’s indecision on his place in the team continues.
Former selector Devang Gandhi praised Gambhir for guiding the team through a period of transition but stressed the need for greater consistency in middle-order selection. Gandhi highlighted the lack of opportunity afforded to other batsmen during the previous successful period (2016-2019), when the top three dominated. He specifically mentioned Axar Patel’s potential as a long-term number five batsman, advocating for more consistent opportunities.
Gandhi also questioned the decision to promote Axar Patel ahead of KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya in two of the ODIs, and the initial plan to bench Iyer, considering his strong performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup. The inconsistencies in selection raise questions about India’s readiness for the upcoming Champions Trophy. While the team’s recent wins are encouraging, the lack of clarity in the middle-order remains a major point of concern.
