**New Delhi, February 16, 2025** – At least 15 people were killed and numerous others injured in a stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on February 15. The incident occurred as large crowds attempted to board trains heading to Prayagraj for the Kumbh Mela.

Witnesses described scenes of chaos and panic as passengers surged forward, pushing and climbing over each other to secure a place on overcrowded trains. Opil Singh, a resident of West Sagarpur, recounted how he lost his 7-year-old daughter, Ayu Singh, in the crush. He stated that the platform was severely overcrowded, and even the trains themselves were packed to capacity. Ayu Singh suffered fatal injuries, including a barbed wire wound to the head.

Family members of victims expressed anger and frustration at the lack of adequate police presence on the platform. Kapil Singh, uncle of one of the deceased, alleged that there were no police officers to control the crowd or assist those injured during the stampede. He further claimed that when he sought help from an officer, he was beaten with a stick.

Sharda Devi and her daughter, Khushi Kumari, who were injured in the stampede, described how people began climbing on top of each other as the train arrived, causing a chaotic and dangerous situation. Khushi Kumari recounted being trapped and struggling to breathe for over 30 minutes.

Relatives of the deceased spent hours searching for their loved ones across various hospitals in the city, facing difficulties in obtaining information from authorities. The scene outside LNJP hospital was particularly distressing, with grieving families breaking down as they received confirmation of deaths. One aunt described the heartbreaking phone call from her 13-year-old nephew, informing her of his mother’s death. Others, like Sujit, frantically searched multiple hospitals for missing family members, expressing frustration at the lack of clear information from police and hospital staff.

Government officials claim that CRPF and police officers, along with emergency services, were dispatched to the scene. However, eyewitness accounts contradict this claim. The incident highlights serious concerns about crowd management and safety protocols at New Delhi Railway Station, particularly during peak travel times. Investigations are underway.
