Sat Feb 15 15:20:00 UTC 2025: ## History-Sheeter Dies After Alleged Police Chase and Arrest

**Karur, Tamil Nadu, February 15, 2025** – A 35-year-old man with a history of over 40 criminal cases, Shankar alias ‘Vettu’ Shankar, died on Thursday at Karur Government Medical College Hospital. Shankar, who sustained injuries during an alleged escape attempt following his arrest on February 7th, had been hospitalized since then.

Police claim Shankar, a resident of Karuppathur village, was arrested after a February 6th altercation where he allegedly injured another man, Nagaraj, with a sickle. During his arrest near Pillapalayam on February 7th, police say Shankar jumped from a bridge, fracturing his leg. He was subsequently admitted to the hospital, where he died on February 13th during surgery due to respiratory distress.

A judicial inquiry has been launched under Section 196 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. However, the Joint Action Against Custodial Torture – Tamil Nadu (JAACT) alleges that Shankar was subjected to illegal detention from February 6th to 8th, leading to his injuries and death. JAACT is demanding an independent investigation and access to police station CCTV footage to support their claims of custodial torture. The incident has sparked controversy and raised concerns about police conduct.
