**Chicago, IL –** Bobby Jenks, a hard-throwing closer instrumental in the Chicago White Sox’s 2005 World Series victory, is battling Stage 4 adenocarcinoma, a form of stomach cancer. The news was reported by Scott Merkin of MLB.com.
Jenks, who is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital near his wife’s family in Portugal, reflected on his past lifestyle in a statement to Merkin. “The s–t I was doing in my 20s and early 30s, no normal person would have survived,” he said. “So, in one way, I’m grateful to be alive. In another way, I’m not surprised this happened.” He emphasized the importance of health and nutrition, acknowledging that he hadn’t prioritized them in his younger years.
Jenks’ seven-year MLB career was marked by success. He made two All-Star teams and averaged 33 saves per season over five years. After his time with the White Sox, he signed a lucrative contract with the Boston Red Sox but his career was cut short due to injury. More recently, he managed the Grand Junction Rockies and the Windy City Thunderbolts. He hopes to return to manage the Thunderbolts in 2025 and plans to attend the White Sox’s 20-year World Series reunion in July.
The news comes as a difficult blow, compounded by a separate hardship earlier this year: Jenks lost his Pacific Palisades home and personal baseball memorabilia in a major Southern California wildfire in January. The baseball community is rallying around Jenks, expressing support and well-wishes for his recovery.
