Sun Feb 16 07:46:43 UTC 2025: ## Deadly Stampede at New Delhi Railway Station Leaves 18 Dead
**New Delhi, February 16, 2025** – At least 18 people, including 14 women and three children, were killed and more than a dozen injured in a stampede at New Delhi Railway Station late Saturday night. The incident occurred on platforms 14 and 15, where a large crowd had gathered to board trains heading to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh Mela.
Initial reports suggest the stampede resulted from the cancellation of two trains to Prayagraj, causing overcrowding and chaos. Delhi Police are analyzing CCTV footage to determine the exact cause. A senior railway official stated that 1,500 general tickets were sold hourly, contributing to the overcrowding. Witnesses described scenes of intense panic and suffocation, with many people crushed in the surging crowd. Porters recounted the harrowing experience of carrying bodies on handcarts.
Acting Delhi Chief Minister Atishi confirmed that 15 bodies were brought to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital. The injured, mostly suffering from lower limb and bone injuries, have been treated and discharged.
Indian Railways has announced compensation of ₹10 lakh for the families of the deceased, ₹2.5 lakh for seriously injured individuals, and ₹1 lakh for those with minor injuries. A two-member committee has been formed to investigate the incident.
The incident has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties, including the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), who accused the government of mismanagement and a lack of crowd control measures. They also criticized the government’s response and alleged attempts to downplay the death toll. Several Chief Ministers, including those of Bihar and Assam, expressed condolences and announced additional compensation for victims from their states. High-ranking officials, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, also expressed their condolences. The incident highlights serious concerns regarding safety and crowd management at major railway stations during periods of high passenger volume.
