**Los Angeles, CA** – The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame announced its 2024 nominees on Wednesday, featuring a diverse lineup spanning multiple genres and eras. This year’s ballot includes several first-time nominees generating significant buzz, alongside established artists vying for induction.
First-timers include Outkast, Phish, Chubby Checker, Billy Idol, The Black Crowes, and Mexican band Maná. These join returning nominees such as Oasis, Joe Cocker, Mariah Carey, Cyndi Lauper, The White Stripes, Bad Company, Soundgarden, and Joy Division/New Order.
The inclusion of Chubby Checker, whose 1960s hit “The Twist” remains a global phenomenon, is particularly noteworthy. Checker, 83, has long campaigned for recognition by the Rock Hall, even taking out a full-page ad in Billboard in 2001 expressing his desire to be recognized during his lifetime.
The ballot reflects a range of musical styles, from 1960s and 70s rock (Cocker, Idol) to punk and alternative (Joy Division, Soundgarden, The White Stripes), arena rock (Oasis, Phish), and hip-hop (Outkast). The nomination of Maná also acknowledges the influence of music beyond mainstream Anglo-American pop.
However, the inclusion of only two female performers – Carey and Lauper – is likely to renew scrutiny of the Rock Hall’s historical underrepresentation of women, despite recent pledges to improve diversity.
Over 1,000 music historians, industry professionals, and inducted artists will vote on the nominees. The inductees will be announced in April, with the induction ceremony taking place in Los Angeles this fall.
