**MUMBAI** – Vicky Kaushal’s historical epic “Chhaava” has achieved a phenomenal box office opening, earning ₹31 crore (approximately $3.7 million USD) on its first day, Valentine’s Day, February 14th. This marks the highest opening day collection for any Indian film in 2025 and the best opening of Vicky Kaushal’s career.
The film, directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Dinesh Vijan, depicts the life of Maratha king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, played by Kaushal. The star-studded cast also includes Rashmika Mandanna, Akshaye Khanna, Ashutosh Rana, and Divya Dutta. The film’s music is composed by A.R. Rahman.
Industry tracker Sacnilk.com reports that “Chhaava” maintained strong momentum on its second day, collecting an estimated ₹7.61 crore, bringing the two-day total to approximately ₹38.61 crore. The film boasts impressive Hindi occupancy rates, reaching 35.17% on its opening day and 32.91% on Saturday.
An ecstatic Kaushal took to Instagram to express his gratitude to fans, stating, “Your love has truly brought #Chhaava to life!” He thanked audiences for celebrating the glory of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.
While the film’s box office success is undeniable, critical reception has been mixed. The Hindustan Times review praised the potential of the film as a powerful tribute to Sambhaji’s bravery but criticized the editing and excessive “superherofication” of the historical figure.
