**New Delhi, February 16, 2025** – The Congress party has accused the BJP and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of launching a smear campaign against Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, alleging character assassination and vowing legal action.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh stated that the attacks stem from Gogoi’s victory in the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat in June 2024 and his subsequent exposure of Sarma’s alleged corruption. Ramesh described the campaign as “atrocious” and characterized Sarma as a “master of defamation, distortion, and diversion,” aiming to distract from his own failures. He predicted Sarma’s defeat in the next Assam elections.

The BJP’s attacks intensified on Saturday when Sarma hinted at a police investigation into allegations of Pakistan links involving Gogoi’s British wife, Elizabeth Colburn, and speculated about potential ISI infiltration during the tenure of Gogoi’s late father, Tarun Gogoi, as Assam’s Chief Minister.

Gogoi has rejected these claims as defamatory and announced his intention to pursue legal action. He also shared a letter in Assamese on Facebook, assuring his wife of the eventual triumph of truth. The situation remains tense, with the Congress promising a strong legal response to the BJP’s actions.
