**DHAKA, BANGLADESH –** A new political party is set to emerge in Bangladesh, born from the student-led uprising that ousted the Sheikh Hasina government last August. This was confirmed by Irish Ambassador to India and Bangladesh, Kevin Kelly, following a recent three-day visit to Dhaka and Cox’s Bazar.
Ambassador Kelly met with key figures in Bangladesh’s interim government, including Chief Adviser Mohammad Yunus and Nahid Islam, an advisor who played a significant role in the uprising. He learned of plans by student coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement to launch a “moderate” party aimed at providing an alternative to the Awami League and Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
The new party, according to Ambassador Kelly, represents the young protesters’ desire to safeguard the legacy of the August 2024 uprising and secure political representation. The announcement is expected to bring changes within the interim government.
Ambassador Kelly, one of the first Western envoys to meet with the interim government’s leadership, drew parallels between Bangladesh’s current situation and Ireland’s own journey toward peace after decades of conflict. He expressed hope that Bangladesh’s reconciliation process would be shorter. His visit also included a trip to Rohingya refugee camps near Cox’s Bazar, highlighting Ireland’s continued commitment to resolving the Rohingya crisis.
The formation of this new party holds significant implications for Bangladesh, particularly with elections expected in December. The party’s emergence adds a new dynamic to the country’s evolving political landscape.
