**GUWAHATI, ASSAM (February 16, 2025)** – Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has welcomed legal action from Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi over allegations surrounding his British wife, Elizabeth Colburn. Sarma stated that the Assam government is also initiating its own legal proceedings.
The controversy erupted after the BJP accused Colburn of having links to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Sarma alleges that Gogoi’s wife refused Indian citizenship for twelve years, aided in radicalization, and that Gogoi himself raised sensitive defense matters in Parliament after his marriage. These claims have been vehemently denied by Gogoi, who called them a smear campaign and vowed to pursue legal action.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh accused Sarma of engaging in character assassination and a desperate attempt to distract from his own failures. Ramesh linked the attack to Gogoi’s recent electoral victory and his outspoken criticism of Sarma’s alleged corruption.
Sarma, in response, dismissed these accusations and reminded the Congress party of their recent electoral losses, predicting their future defeat in the upcoming 2026 Assam assembly elections. He also indicated the possibility of a police case and the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the allegations. The BJP’s accusations initially surfaced earlier this week. The situation is rapidly escalating, with both sides prepared for legal battles.
