Sat Feb 15 10:25:56 UTC 2025: ## Kochi’s Chander Kunj Towers Face Urgent Demolition After High Court Order

**KOCHI, KERALA –** The twin 26-story towers of Chander Kunj Army Towers in Kochi, Kerala, are slated for urgent evacuation, demolition, and reconstruction following a Kerala High Court order. The order, citing serious structural issues in the buildings developed by the Army Welfare Housing Organisation (AWHO), prompted the formation of a committee chaired by Ernakulam District Collector N.S.K. Umesh.

Collector Umesh, after inspecting the towers on February 15th, 2025, announced that immediate action would be taken, prioritizing the safety of residents. While no timeline has been set, weekly meetings are planned to expedite the process. The committee is addressing concerns from apartment owners, who are reportedly considering appealing the High Court’s decision.

The demolition’s complexity is heightened by the proximity of a metro line and the adjacent ‘A’ tower. The committee, including representatives from the Kochi Metro Rail Authority, is exploring demolition techniques that minimize risk to surrounding structures. Evacuation of the ‘A’ tower will only be necessary during the demolition itself. Temporary relocation of utilities will also be arranged.

Consultations are underway with structural engineer Anil Joseph, experienced in large-scale demolitions, to determine the safest and most efficient method. A meeting with the AWHO managing director is scheduled for next week to further discuss evacuation plans and address residents’ concerns. Despite the planned appeal, the committee will proceed with planning for evacuation and demolition.
