Sat Feb 15 11:23:07 UTC 2025: ## Modi’s US Visit Yields Significant Gains Despite Trade Tensions

**Washington D.C.** – Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the United States concluded with a series of significant agreements, despite pre-existing trade and immigration concerns. While friction points were anticipated, the meeting between Modi and President Donald Trump was deemed largely successful, achieving key objectives for India.

A joint statement highlighted six areas of cooperation: defense, trade and investment, energy, technology and innovation, multilateral cooperation, and people-to-people ties. The first three were identified as paramount.

A key success was the avoidance of public criticism regarding India’s large trade surplus with the US. Both countries agreed to work towards reducing this surplus through a multi-sectoral trade agreement by fall 2025. Similarly, while the US emphasized aggressively combating illegal immigration, assurances were given to maintain student, professional, and legal migration pathways.

The visit also saw the announcement of a 10-year defense partnership, including India’s acquisition of Javelin anti-tank missiles, Stryker combat vehicles, and P-81 maritime patrol aircraft, along with US co-production of AI-enabled unmanned underwater systems. The potential sale of F-35 fighter jets was also discussed.

To address the trade imbalance, India committed to increasing oil and gas imports from the US, potentially from $15 billion to $25 billion. Furthermore, cooperation on nuclear energy continues with India improving its civil liability framework to facilitate US involvement in reactor construction.

A new initiative focusing on strategic mineral recovery from heavy industries was also launched, aiming to secure vital economic and military resources.

While concerns surrounding the Gurpatwant Singh Pannun assassination case were addressed through a joint commitment to combating threats to public safety and security, the issue was largely handled diplomatically.

Overall, the visit was deemed productive, showcasing a warm relationship between Modi and Trump and achieving substantial agreements across various sectors. Despite looming tariff increases, India secured key defense deals and made progress on trade and energy cooperation, leaving the Indian delegation optimistic about future collaboration.
