Thu Feb 13 08:42:05 UTC 2025: **Delhi Police Detain Over 10 Jamia Millia Islamia Students After Protest**

NEW DELHI, Feb 13, 2025 – Over 10 students from Jamia Millia Islamia University (JMI) were detained by Delhi Police on Thursday following a protest against disciplinary action taken against two PhD students. The protest, which began Monday, stemmed from “show cause” notices issued to the PhD students last year for participating in a demonstration.

University authorities claimed that protesting students damaged university property, including the central canteen, and broke down the door of the security advisor’s office, prompting the intervention. Police sources stated that JMI requested police assistance to remove the students to maintain law and order. Police intervened early Thursday morning, detaining the students. A significant police presence remains on campus.

JMI released a statement alleging that the students disrupted classes and prevented access to the central library, particularly problematic with mid-semester exams approaching. The protesting students are demanding that no further disciplinary action be taken against those involved in the demonstrations. The university’s disciplinary committee is scheduled to meet on February 25th to review the role of the two PhD students in the “Jamia Resistance Day” event held on December 15, 2024. This annual event commemorates the 2019 protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The detained students remain under investigation.
