**Chennai, February 13, 2025** – A panel discussion at the “Maatram 2025” event in Chennai, hosted by The Banyan and HCL Foundation, showcased both progress and persistent challenges in tackling homelessness in the city. The event brought together government officials, NGO representatives, and activists to discuss solutions and share success stories.
Significant achievements were highlighted, including the dignified burial of 4782 homeless individuals who passed away on the streets, the reunification of 1240 people with their families, and the provision of essential medical care to 917 homeless individuals with mental health issues, with 430 subsequently returning home. The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) announced 49 existing shelters catering to various needs and plans to build more based on an ongoing survey.
However, panelists also emphasized critical ongoing issues. The lack of attention to the safety and specific needs of homeless women was a recurring theme, as was the need for more comprehensive services within shelters, including job training, livelihood support, and education to empower residents to transition to independent living. The public was urged to utilize available resources, including a toll-free number, to help connect vulnerable individuals with shelter and support services. The event underscored the collaborative effort required between government agencies, NGOs, and the public to effectively address homelessness in Chennai.
