Wed Feb 12 20:55:12 UTC 2025: ## Israel Threatens New Gaza War Unless Hamas Releases Hostages by Weekend

**GAZA CITY/JERUSALEM** – Israel has issued an ultimatum to Hamas, threatening to launch a new military offensive in Gaza unless all remaining hostages are released by Saturday. Defense Minister Israel Katz went further, stating that a renewed conflict would not end until Hamas is defeated and the Trump administration’s plan to relocate Gazans is implemented.

The threat comes after Hamas refused to meet the deadline for the next prisoner exchange under a fragile 42-day ceasefire, citing alleged Israeli violations of the agreement. Mediators from Qatar and Egypt are attempting to salvage the truce, currently facing increasing tensions as both sides accuse each other of breaches. Hamas’s chief negotiator is currently in Cairo for talks.

While a series of small-scale prisoner releases has taken place under the truce, the recent release of hostages sparked outrage in Israel after some were shown emaciated and forced to speak on camera. Hamas, in turn, alleges that Israel has failed to fulfill its aid commitments.

Israeli officials have expressed frustration with Hamas’ tactics, with one student, Mali Abramovitch, calling the situation unacceptable. Conversely, Gazan resident Saleh Awad voiced anxiety over Israel’s intentions and expressed fears of potential displacement. Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem reiterated their commitment to the ceasefire but insisted on Israeli compliance.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have both urged both parties to maintain the ceasefire, emphasizing the humanitarian consequences of renewed fighting. The ICRC highlighted the risk to the remaining hostages and to the Gazan population dependent on humanitarian aid.

The looming threat of renewed conflict casts a long shadow, especially with Israel’s Defense Minister mentioning the implementation of a controversial plan proposed by former US President Donald Trump that would see the relocation of Gaza’s residents to neighboring countries. Hamas has denounced the plan, calling for global protests. The already tense situation is further complicated by the high civilian death tolls on both sides since the October 2023 conflict began. The UN estimates at least 48,222 deaths in Gaza, while Israel reports 1,211 deaths within its borders.
