Wed Feb 12 23:30:10 UTC 2025: ## Bumrah’s Absence a Major Blow for India Ahead of Champions Trophy

**NEW DELHI –** India’s Champions Trophy hopes suffered a significant setback with the withdrawal of star pacer Jasprit Bumrah due to a persistent back injury. The news, announced Tuesday, left the team scrambling to fill the void left by the world-class bowler.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed the team’s disappointment, stating that Bumrah’s absence was a major blow. “Obviously we wanted him desperately,” Gambhir told Star Sports. “He’s a world-class player.” However, he acknowledged that the injury was beyond their control.

Bumrah sustained the back injury during the Sydney Test last month. While initially expected to recover in time for the Champions Trophy, he was ultimately ruled out after failing to regain full fitness. His withdrawal came just before the final deadline for squad submission.

Harshit Rana, who impressed with six wickets in the recent ODI series against England, has been named as Bumrah’s replacement. Mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy also secured a spot in the squad, replacing Yashasvi Jaiswal, who will now serve as a non-travelling substitute along with Mohammed Siraj and Shivam Dube. Gambhir expressed confidence in Rana and Arshdeep Singh, stating that their inclusion presents an opportunity for them to shine. The return of experienced bowler Mohammad Shami also provides some solace to the team. Despite the setback, India will look to other players to step up in Bumrah’s absence during the upcoming tournament.
