Thu Feb 13 12:02:30 UTC 2025: ## Jamia Millia Islamia Students Detained After Protest

**New Delhi, [Date]** – Delhi Police detained several Jamia Millia Islamia students on Thursday following a four-day protest against disciplinary action taken by the university administration against PhD students. The students were protesting several decisions, including the disciplinary committee’s ruling against Comrade Saurabh, show-cause notices issued to various students for voicing dissent, and the revocation of office memos dated August 29, 2022, and November 29, 2024. They also demanded the cancellation of a notice imposing fines for putting up posters and graffiti on campus walls and an end to future show-cause notices for on-campus protests, citing infringement on freedom of expression.

The university administration has yet to respond to the students’ demands, even as a disciplinary committee is scheduled to review the protests of two PhD students on February 25th. The protest, supported by student organizations including the All India Students Association and the All India Revolutionary Students Organization, stemmed from disciplinary action against two PhD students.

The university claims the students violated campus regulations and were found carrying objectionable items. The administration stated that it took preventative measures due to property damage, defacement, and disruption of classes, aiming to restore normalcy to campus operations. Despite the administration’s offer to discuss the students’ demands in a committee meeting, the protesting students refused to engage with university officials, leading to their removal from the protest site and subsequent expulsion from campus. The university sought police intervention to maintain order. The protest followed a “Jamia Resistance Day” observed by PhD students in 2024, commemorating the 2019 police response, which had not been authorized by the university.
