**Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh – February 12, 2025** – A road safety walkathon was held in Vijayawada on Tuesday to raise awareness about road safety, highlighting the alarming number of road fatalities in the NTR district. The event, organized by the Transport Department as part of National Road Safety Month, saw participation from students, officials, and NGOs.

NTR District Collector G. Lakshmisha emphasized the critical role of youth in promoting road safety, stating that they should lead by example. He revealed that 400 people died in road accidents in the district last year, including pedestrians. Mr. Lakshmisha stressed the importance of helmet use for two-wheeler riders and warned of stringent action against traffic rule violators. He linked road safety to the “Swarnandhra Vision-2047” initiative, underscoring its importance for the region’s future.

Deputy Transport Commissioner Mohan detailed ongoing awareness campaigns, including rallies and meetings with various departments, to tackle the issue. He also urged pedestrians to exercise caution while crossing roads. The walkathon, starting from the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium, involved officials from various departments, including the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, and students from several colleges.
