**Imphal, India** – Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned on Sunday following mounting pressure from within his own party, the BJP, over his handling of the ongoing ethnic violence in the state. The resignation comes after a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi.
Singh’s departure follows a series of events that highlighted growing dissatisfaction with his leadership. These included a planned no-confidence motion by the Manipur Congress, warnings from within the BJP that the government was on the verge of collapse, and the withdrawal of support from several key political parties, including the National People’s Party (NPP) and, briefly, the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)).
A significant factor contributing to Singh’s downfall was a leaked audiotape, currently under forensic examination by the Supreme Court, which allegedly implicates him in fueling the ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities. A forensic analysis suggests a 93% probability that the voice on the tape is Singh’s.
The violence, which began in May 2023, has claimed over 220 lives, displaced tens of thousands, and resulted in widespread destruction of property. Dissenting BJP MLAs openly criticized Singh’s lack of a clear roadmap for peace, stating that his government had failed to address the core issues of the conflict. Poor attendance at a meeting Singh called with ruling coalition MLAs further underscored the extent of the dissent within his own ranks.
Singh’s resignation marks a significant development in the ongoing crisis in Manipur. The central government will now need to address the political instability and the deeply rooted ethnic tensions that continue to plague the state. The future of the Manipur government and the path towards restoring peace and normalcy remain uncertain.
