**NEW DELHI** – The 648th birth anniversary of Sant Ravidas, a prominent figure of the Bhakti movement and founder of the Ravidasia sect, will be observed on Wednesday, February 12th, 2025. This annual celebration, known as Ravidash Jayanti, falls on Magha Purnima according to the Hindu calendar.
Sant Ravidas, also known as Raidas, Rohidas, and Ruidas, is revered for his contributions to social reform and his powerful devotional songs and verses that continue to influence the Bhakti movement. While the exact year of his birth is debated by historians (with suggestions ranging from 1377 to 1399 CE in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh), his teachings on social equality and his life story, which includes periods of hardship and eventual widespread influence, remain central to the celebrations.
Devotees will mark the occasion with traditional practices, including devotional singing (bhajans and kirtan), processions (shobha yatras), and community meals (langar). Sant Ravidas’s philosophy, emphasizing that individuals are defined by their actions rather than birth, and that God resides in hearts free from malice, continues to inspire millions.
