Wed Feb 12 07:03:21 UTC 2025: ## Millions Gather for Holy Dip as Magh Purnima Concludes Maha Kumbh’s Fifth Royal Bath
**Prayagraj, India (February 12, 2025)** – Millions of devotees converged on the Triveni Sangam (confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers) in Prayagraj today to mark the culmination of the Magh Purnima celebrations and the fifth “Shahi Snan” (royal bath) of the Maha Kumbh Mela. Considered the most significant of the twelve full moons in the Hindu calendar, Magh Purnima holds immense religious significance, with many believing that Lord Vishnu resides in the Ganga River on this day.
The auspicious day, which began on February 11th at 6:55 PM and concluded at 7:22 PM on February 12th, saw devotees participating in early morning rituals. The optimal times for the holy dip at the Kumbh Mela were between 8:25 AM and 9:49 AM, and 11:12 AM and 12:35 PM. Those unable to bathe in the sacred river were encouraged to perform the ritual at home, adding Ganga water to their bathwater.
Beyond the holy dip, the day involved various religious practices, including offering prayers to Surya (Sun God) and Lakshmi-Narayan (Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu), chanting Vishnu mantras or reciting the Vishnu Chalisa, performing aarti, and venerating Lord Shiva and Satyanarayan. Many also observed fasts (vrat), performed pitru tarpana (ancestral rites), and engaged in charitable giving, donating food, clothing, and other necessities to the needy. The offering of a thread with 108 knots to Tulsi (holy basil) is also considered auspicious.
This year’s Magh Purnima was further enhanced by a rare alignment of planets and constellations, promising increased spiritual merit for those participating in the rituals. However, it is important to note that the information provided here is based on beliefs and traditions, and consultation with religious experts is recommended before undertaking any ritual practices. The consumption of onion, garlic, meat, alcohol, and other tamasic foods was discouraged on this holy day.
