VIRUDHUNAGAR, February 12, 2025 – Councillors from across the political spectrum in Virudhunagar vehemently protested a recent decision by municipal officials to impose high property taxes on small hutments. The protest unfolded during Wednesday’s municipal council meeting, chaired by R. Madhavan and attended by Municipal Commissioner Suganthi.
CPI(M) councillor Jayakumar spearheaded the opposition, questioning the reversal of a previous council decision to revoke the tax hike. His concerns were echoed by councillors from the DMK, AIADMK, Congress, and independent parties. The councillors surrounded the Chairman, demanding action. Chairman Madhavan responded that he would bring the resolution to the attention of the Director of Municipal Administration.
Further disagreements arose over a proposed ban on roadside shops near the Mariamman Temple and Teppakulam, with councillors arguing it would harm vendors’ livelihoods. Concerns were also raised about excessive entrance fees charged for exhibitions held on aided school grounds. The council meeting concluded with unresolved tensions surrounding these issues.
