**Lahore, Pakistan** – Matthew Breetzke etched his name into cricket history on Monday, February 10th, becoming the first man to score a 150 on his One Day International (ODI) debut. The 26-year-old South African opener smashed 150 runs off 148 balls in the second match of a tri-series against New Zealand in Lahore, surpassing the previous record of 148 set by West Indies legend Desmond Haynes in 1978.
Breetzke’s remarkable innings, which included 11 boundaries and five sixes, propelled South Africa to a challenging 304. He formed crucial partnerships with Jamie Smith (93-run stand) and Wiaan Mulder (131-run stand), helping South Africa recover after losing early wickets. The pair ensured a strong finish, adding 108 runs in the final 10 overs. Breetzke finally fell to Matt Henry in the 46th over.
This stunning performance comes after a less auspicious start to his international career. He debuted in Test cricket in October 2024 against Bangladesh, scoring a duck, and has played 10 T20I matches, scoring 151 runs with a high score of 51. Breetzke’s ODI debut opportunity arose due to the unavailability of several first-choice players, involved in the SA20 tournament. His incredible 150 has undoubtedly cemented his place in South African cricket.
