**Northern Syria** – Residents returning to the northern Syrian town of Tal Rifaat are facing a devastating scene of widespread destruction and displacement following its recent recapture by Turkish-backed opposition forces. The town, a key battleground in Syria’s protracted civil war, has been repeatedly subjected to conflict and population displacement since 2011.

Returnees are now grappling with extensive war damage, including streets littered with rubble and destroyed homes. Evidence of hasty evacuations – abandoned possessions, scattered debris, and hastily dismantled barricades – is prevalent throughout the town. Despite the overwhelming challenges, residents are determined to begin the arduous process of clearing debris and rebuilding their lives. The scale of the reconstruction required, however, remains immense.
