Sun Feb 09 21:29:34 UTC 2025: ## Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh Resigns Amidst Ethnic Violence and No-Confidence Threat

**Imphal, Manipur –** Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh submitted his resignation to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Sunday, just days before a scheduled assembly session. The move comes amidst escalating political tension following months of ethnic violence in the state and a looming no-confidence motion from the opposition.

Singh, in his resignation letter, expressed gratitude to the central government for its support. While the BJP maintains a comfortable majority in the 60-member assembly, with 32 MLAs and support from other parties, speculation swirled that a floor test could see MLAs defying the party whip, potentially triggering a leadership change. The opposition, comprised of Congress (5 seats), NPP (7), and other smaller parties, had threatened a no-confidence vote.

The resignation follows a meeting between Singh and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi. Although the BJP has retained a majority despite the withdrawal of support from the NPP, the government faced considerable pressure over its handling of the ongoing ethnic violence, which erupted in May 2023, claiming over 250 lives and displacing thousands.

Singh had previously asserted his government’s commitment to restoring peace and unity in Manipur. The 7th session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly is scheduled to commence on Monday, February 10th. The political fallout from Singh’s resignation, and the subsequent maneuvering within the BJP and the opposition, will significantly shape the state’s future in the coming days and weeks.
