**Deir al-Balah, Gaza Strip –** Three more Israeli civilian hostages, held by Hamas since October 7, 2023, were released to the International Red Cross on February 8th, 2025, as part of an ongoing ceasefire agreement. The release of Eli Sharabi (52), Ohad Ben Ami (56), and Or Levy (34) marks the fifth prisoner exchange since the January 19th truce, bringing the total number of released hostages to 21. The men, visibly weakened, were forced to make public statements before being handed over. Simultaneously, Israel released dozens of Palestinian prisoners, including 18 serving life sentences for past attacks.
This latest exchange falls under the first phase of a two-phase ceasefire agreement, which also includes the return of Palestinians to northern Gaza and increased humanitarian aid. However, the fragile truce faces significant challenges. US President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal to relocate the Palestinian population from Gaza, while welcomed by Israel, has been widely condemned internationally and could complicate future negotiations. Hamas, holding significant leverage with the remaining hostages, may be hesitant to further cooperate if the depopulation plan proceeds.
The first phase aims to release 33 hostages and nearly 2,000 prisoners, but over 70 hostages remain in Gaza, with Israel claiming some are deceased. The second phase, scheduled for later this year, would involve the release of the remaining hostages in exchange for a lasting ceasefire. Failure to reach an agreement by early March could lead to a resumption of hostilities. While Israel maintains its commitment to destroying Hamas, a key right-wing partner in the Netanyahu coalition is already advocating for an end to the ceasefire. Hamas insists on a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza before releasing further hostages. The October 7th attack that triggered the conflict resulted in significant civilian casualties on both sides.
