Mon Feb 10 11:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Winter Storm Warning Issued: Heavy Snow and Ice Expected Tuesday and Wednesday

**ROANOKE, VA –** A major winter storm is expected to hit the region Tuesday, prompting a Winter Storm Warning from 6 am Tuesday to noon Wednesday. The National Weather Service has declared a First Alert Weather Day for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Monday will see mostly cloudy skies giving way to sunshine, with highs near 49°F. However, residents are urged to complete any outdoor activities before Tuesday morning, as snow will begin falling before daybreak.

Snow will intensify throughout Tuesday morning, leading to hazardous road conditions and likely school and work closures. By Tuesday afternoon, a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain is anticipated south of the Route 460 corridor as temperatures rise, resulting in significant ice accumulation. Areas north of 460 will continue to see snow.

The highest snowfall is expected along the Virginia/West Virginia border and parts of the Shenandoah Valley, tapering off towards the Virginia/North Carolina line. Significant ice accumulation is possible along the Blue Ridge Mountains, particularly near the Virginia/North Carolina border, potentially causing power outages.

The wintry mix will transition to all rain by midnight Tuesday, leaving slushy conditions. Additional rain Wednesday could lead to flooding in low-lying areas. Temperatures are expected to rise after the storm, aiding cleanup efforts.

While Thursday and Friday are forecast to be drier, another storm system is anticipated for Valentine’s Day weekend. Residents are advised to monitor updates for potential flooding risks later in the week.
