**Mumbai, February 10, 2025** – The Mumbai police have launched an inquiry into allegations of offensive and derogatory remarks made on the YouTube show “India’s Got Latent,” hosted by comedian Samay Raina. The investigation follows a formal complaint filed against YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, social media influencer Apoorva Makhija, and the show’s organizers.
The complaint, also filed with the Maharashtra Women’s Commission, alleges the use of abusive language targeting women. The complainant demands strict legal action, citing obscene jokes about women’s bodies made for the purpose of boosting popularity and profits. The broadcast, viewed globally, featured the accused laughing at their inappropriate comments.
Following public outrage, Allahbadia issued a public apology on X (formerly Twitter) and in a video, expressing regret for his insensitive remarks and vowing to use his platform responsibly in the future. He requested the removal of the offensive portions from the video.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that while freedom of speech is guaranteed, it ends where it infringes on others’ freedom. He indicated that action should be taken against those who violate societal norms. Former NCW chief Rekha Sharma also expressed shock at the remarks, highlighting their negative impact on society and youth. The Shiv Sena also condemned the comments, issuing a warning to the producers.
The complaint emphasizes the severity of the incident and its detrimental effects on women’s dignity and calls for criminal charges under the Indian Penal Code and the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against all involved. While no arrests have been made yet, the Mumbai police investigation is ongoing. Allahbadia, a recipient of a National Creators Award last year, has previously collaborated with the Digital India Corporation.
