Sun Feb 09 21:04:30 UTC 2025: ## Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh Resigns Amidst State Violence

Imphal, Manipur – Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has submitted his resignation to the Governor, just a day before the state assembly session was scheduled to begin. The resignation comes amidst widespread speculation, fueled by reports that the opposition was preparing a no-confidence motion against him.

Singh’s resignation follows over two years of intense violence in Manipur, which has claimed over 250 lives. The opposition had been consistently demanding President’s Rule in the state. The sudden resignation raises questions about the future governance of Manipur.

According to the Indian Constitution, the Governor assumes responsibility for the state’s administration following a Chief Minister’s resignation. The Governor may ask the outgoing CM to continue as acting CM until a new CM is elected, although the acting CM’s powers are limited. In situations of political crisis or extraordinary circumstances, the Governor can recommend President’s Rule, a decision ultimately made by the President. However, given the BJP’s current majority in the Manipur Assembly, a significant political crisis is not immediately apparent.

The ruling BJP is expected to swiftly select a new Chief Minister. After an official announcement, the new CM will be sworn in before the Governor and will be required to prove their majority in the Assembly through a confidence motion before forming a new cabinet.
