**New Delhi –** Newly elected BJP MLA Mohan Bisht has announced plans to rename Mustafabad, his constituency in Delhi, to either Shiv Puri or Shiv Vihar. Mustafabad, which suffered significantly during the 2020 Delhi riots, has a Hindu majority, according to Bisht, who justifies the name change on this basis. He dismissed concerns about the practicalities, stating that transportation and other services would improve. His comment, “The bulldozer will run,” has raised eyebrows.
Bisht, a six-time MLA who won by a significant margin of 17,578 votes, brushed aside criticism from AAP’s Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan, who questioned the BJP’s motives and urged a focus on positive development. Bisht’s victory in Mustafabad comes after he was shifted from his previous seat of Karawal Nagar following the BJP’s landslide victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, securing 48 out of 70 seats. The AAP won 22, and the Congress drew a blank.
The proposed renaming has sparked debate, particularly given Mustafabad’s history and the potential for further divisiveness. The controversy underscores the political sensitivities surrounding the area and highlights the BJP’s assertive approach following its decisive election win.
