**Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, February 9, 2025** – A two-day road safety hackathon in Coimbatore concluded Sunday, showcasing innovative and cost-effective solutions to reduce road accidents. The event, organized by the Coimbatore district administration, city police, and the NGO Uyir, saw participation from students and professionals.
Minister for Electricity, Prohibition, and Excise V. Senthil Balaji lauded Coimbatore’s “Road Safety Model City Project” as an example for other Tamil Nadu cities. He announced the state government’s intention to implement some of the hackathon’s winning ideas.
Participants presented solutions focusing on both accident prevention and post-accident response. Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati praised the innovative and cost-effective nature of the proposals, stating that select ideas would be incubated and implemented locally. City Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar highlighted the urgent need for prioritized road safety measures, noting that road accident fatalities exceed those from traditional crimes. Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran emphasized the hackathon’s dual focus on prevention and post-accident response.
Prizes were awarded in both student and professional categories. In the professional category, NexTurn won first prize (₹1 lakh), followed by DromoLys Research & Development Pvt. Ltd. and Intel/Dassault Systèmes, Bengaluru. In the student category, St. Joseph’s Institute of Technology, Chennai, took first prize (₹1 lakh), with Erode Sengunthar Engineering College, Perundurai, and Dr. Mahalingam College of Engineering and Technology, Pollachi, securing second and third place respectively. The event underscores a growing commitment to improving road safety in Coimbatore and across Tamil Nadu.
