Sun Feb 09 15:18:01 UTC 2025: ## Thoothukudi Fishermen Launch Indefinite Strike
**THOOTHUKUDI, February 9, 2025** – Over 260 mechanized fishing boats in Thoothukudi harbor have ceased operations, beginning an indefinite strike on Monday. The strike, organized by the Association of Mechanised Boat Owners and Workers, protests the Fisheries Department’s failure to approve alternative livelihoods for fishermen and implement previously recommended solutions.
The association cites the department’s inaction on recommendations made by former Collector K. Senthil Raj, involving revenue, fisheries, and police departments, as a key reason for the strike. Fishermen are specifically demanding a solution allowing for single-night fishing trips, a request they claim has gone unanswered for an extended period.
Xavier Vaz of the Thoothukudi Mechanised Boat Owners Association stated that despite repeated requests, officials have failed to implement any of the recommendations. The ongoing strike affects 135 boats that typically rotate daily fishing trips.
