**New Delhi, February 9, 2025** – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved a landslide victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, winning 48 out of 70 seats and ending the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) 27-year reign. This decisive win marks a significant shift in the political landscape of the national capital, coming months after BJP’s successes in Maharashtra and Haryana.
The results saw several prominent AAP leaders, including Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, lose their constituencies. While AAP retained some seats, the party’s overall performance was significantly below expectations. A notable exception was Atishi, who won the Kalkaji seat, defeating BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri by 3,521 votes.
Atishi’s victory celebration, however, drew criticism from Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal, who described it as a “shameless display” given the party’s overall defeat. Maliwal, a sharp critic of AAP and Kejriwal, linked the party’s loss to divine retribution, referencing a previous assault case involving Kejriwal’s aide. Despite her criticism, Maliwal remains a member of the party.
The Congress party, once a dominant force in Delhi, failed to win any seats for the third consecutive assembly election. Parvesh Verma’s victory over Kejriwal in the New Delhi seat further underscored the BJP’s dominance. The BJP’s triumph solidifies its position as a major player in national politics.
