Sun Feb 09 12:12:44 UTC 2025: **Indian Security Forces Kill 31 Maoist Rebels in Chhattisgarh Clash**
Raipur, Chhattisgarh – Indian security forces have killed at least 31 suspected Maoist rebels in a major encounter in Chhattisgarh’s Indravati area, police announced Monday. The gun battle, the deadliest this year and the second major clash in less than a month, also resulted in the deaths of two security personnel and injuries to two others.
The operation, launched Sunday based on intelligence reports of a large Maoist gathering, involved hundreds of police and paramilitary soldiers. Inspector General Pattilingam Sundarraj stated that the death toll may rise as search operations continue, with additional forces deployed to the encounter site. Automatic weapons and grenade launchers were recovered from the scene.
Home Minister Amit Shah hailed the operation as a significant step towards achieving a “Naxal-free India,” reiterating the government’s aim to crush the Maoist rebellion by 2026. The previous major clash in Chhattisgarh occurred on January 23rd, resulting in the deaths of 16 rebels in Gariband district.
The Maoist insurgency, active for decades in central and eastern India, has led to numerous clashes and casualties on both sides. The rebels, who follow a Maoist ideology, fight for improved conditions for marginalized Indigenous communities, often targeting government infrastructure and personnel. The government has deployed tens of thousands of soldiers in a large-scale counter-insurgency effort, resulting in the deaths of approximately 287 rebels in the past year alone, according to government data. Despite these efforts, the conflict persists, fueled by deep-seated socio-economic inequalities in regions affected by the insurgency.
